Who we are

To create a smile and encourage imagination and excitement in a child's life who is dealing with very difficult medical conditions.  Capes are not only fun at the moment, but they offer even more playful times when they are well, once again.

Capes 4 Courage-Virginia was founded by Janet Hefren in 2013 in Charlottesville, VA.  The capes were custom-made to suit the personality of the child.  Whether it was princesses, lions, unicorns or super heroes.  She managed to fulfill the cape demands at multiple departments at the University of Virginia hospital, Ronald MacDonald House, and private requests for 5 years.  It was then that people, friends, businesses and organizations heard about the program, and, happily it grew to the corners of the state.  Capes 4 Courage became a 501(k)3 non-profit in 2019 allowing much needed donations to keep the demand filled...and more smiles on children's faces.  Capes encourage their hearts and imaginations to live a long, happy and healthy life.
